So What’ll be New in the New Year?
Yep, it’s that wonderful post-Christmas coming-down-off-adrenaline-and-contemplating-a-new-year time again!
If you are in the goal-setting frame-of-mind (or you’ve just come up with your New Year’s Resolutions), I have a question for you:
What will provide the energy to see these goals and resoutions through?
You may have just finished last year with a sense of “Damn. I really lost my way on those goals I set” - wouldn’t it be great to give yourself a greater chance of success this year?
Here’s some suggestions for some energisers for your goals:
- A monthly or bi-monthly Defrag Day. One friend of mine calls this the Refocus Day, another the Reallignement Day. This is a day (or part thereof) which includes the following elements: some form of enjoyable activity which recharges your batteries (something self-indulgent), a period of or process for reflection (assessing and learning from recent busyness, wins and losses, etc), some form of either refining your plans or reconnecting with your vision, and possibly some time spent clearing your head and your Outlook Reminders and your living or workspace.
- Morning Pages. A simple routine whereby you take a journal or a couple of pieces of paper and spend 2-5 minutes just pouring your thoughts onto the page before starting work. This often clears the head, generates solutions and ideas, and settles us for the day.
- Change some dynamics in a relationship. This might mean setting a limit; voicing your expectations calmly, respectfully, clearly; finding the best way to express care to the other person; exploring a better process for discussing tough topics.
- Collaboration. Find a partner or group that can give you support and receive your support in reaching a common goal.
Or it could be something unique to you. If you’re going to set a goal, make sure you’ll have enough fuel for the journey.
Happy New Year! (By the way, I hope you’ve had time to browse my 7 Christmas Leftover posts which were just for fun).
